Fashion Inspiration: Dressing For The Derby

| |

The only time when you get to see art, fashion, music and horses all at one venue is a Derby event and this weekend in Mumbai as sports meets glamour, we’re sharing some fashion inspiration on how to dress at the races. The McDowell Signature Indian Derby 2014 is all set to hit the green turf of Mahalaxmi Race course on the 1st and 2nd of February. So ladies, get your sunscreen on and get dressed for the Derby (even if you don’t happen to get the tickets!) Here is a dose of Derby-inspired fashion.

Hats on to you!

The luscious-coat horses and the gorgeous horse-riders are not the only things we go for to the derby. Derby is all about hats and sunglasses. Where else can you spot anybody wearing such pretty hats these days? Since the Victorian era is growing back in our hearts, we’d say wear a classic Victorian hat and walk like a queen, unaffected by the scorching sun, and seeing the world through your over sized, if not rose tinted sunglasses.

Stepford Wives Dresses

Derby days are basically warm, the best idea would be to give your winter clothes a miss and dress up in pretty looking outfits dipped in pastel shades of your favourite cupcakes. Don’t be afraid to wear prints. Opt for a floral dress in a neat silhouette for an ultra-feminine look. Alternatively, you may wear an animal print one to show off your wilder side. If you want to still experiment further, try mixing prints- horizontal and vertical stripes for instance.

She’s so Sheath

Sheath dresses can be labelled as dresses of Derby. Sheath dresses define your waist line accentuating your womanly curves. Wear those with your string of pearls like Jackie Kennedy or with an elegant scarf with round black sunnies. That and a hat.

Black and white

Derby dressing is all about elegance and charm and the only thing more elegant than a black-and-white combo is a black-and-white combo by Chanel. Well tailored cuts and minimalist accessories with just a head gear would do the trick.

Tea length + Volume

Go lady-like in a voluminous tea length hem skirt or dress. At the Derby, for once, you get to see men at their masculine best and women putting their best feminine foot forward. Embrace the opportunity by giving volume to your silhouette and walk down the race course, feeling like a queen with an invisible crown on your head.

Women at the Derby are always well dressed with neat and tidy hair. Too much make-up is not considered classy and should be avoided. Those of you heading to the Derby this Sunday, let us know what you wore. For the rest, you can sport the Derby look at your next themed house party.

When: 1st and 2nd February 2014
